During a hike into the woods this fall in search of macro subjects, I noticed this snail making its way along the decaying log. It was headed for the Autumn-Colored Virginia Creeper, so I hurredly set up the camera to focus near the leaves and hoped that the snail's course wouldn't change much. As the snail got among the leaves and began to crawl over the vine, I made the exposure. The snail is one of the good examples of the mathematics of nature. The shape of their shell is known as a logrithmic spiral. With each revolution the radius of the spiral grows exponentially, producing an intricate and beautiful curve.
