During an early visit to a local blackberry farm, I noticed the sun beginning to create shadows on the red barn and on this freshly painted wagon. The combinations of red and green being illuminated in various degrees made an interesting scene. To retain a fair amount of detail in the shadow areas of the barn and the front of the wagon, I placed those areas on about zone IV or slightly above. This conveniently placed the sunlit side of the wagon on zone VI, giving it an elevated brightness that accentuates the filtered early light. The bright grass in front of the barn was in direct sun and fell on zone VII, giving a representation of the brightest morning sun.
