The Gypsum Hills area in the south central part of Kansas is characterized by red soil rich in iron oxide and by hills topped with bare rock bluffs. The region is relatively arid, but during a spring trip to this area I discovered this expanse of wildflowers. The cirrus clouds were also spectacular that day, and I was glad to see this display in conjunction with the colorful foreground. I used a relatively wide angle lens to emphasize the foreground flowers and to also extend the scene far into the interesting sky. There is a windmill in the scene, but it is almost imperceptable on the horizon formed by the rocky ridge.
