Although I certainly use color methods to capture pre-dawn images, I also often see applications for B&W. This image of the Historic Eldridge Hotel has merit in both mediums, and following a few color exposures I quickly changed to B&W film. Instead of simply creating B&W images from the color exposures, I prefer to expose directly onto B&W film due to the subsequent contrast control available during development. In this case, the darkest near sidewalk was placed on Zone III, causing the brighter sky to fall on Zone VI for the exposure. This resulted in a good range of negative densities with normal develoment. The concrete sidewalk and lighter stone on the building fell on about Zone V, giving a good amount of definition and detail.
