I first studied this view of the Kansas River Bridge and the buildings of northern Lawrence during the most recent July 4th fireworks display. I returned on this evening a few months later, after the leaves had fallen, and the reasonably clear evening was making a soft, colorful glow in the sky. This makes a very effective backdrop for certain types of architectural photography, providing a clear outline of the structures. As an additional feature during this twilight time, the streetlights and interior building lights normally come on, giving a hundred colorful points of interest in the scene. This image was taken about 40 minutes after sunset, and a Zone VI exposure was given to the brightest sky just above the horizon. Using a moderate aperture, the resulting exposure time was around 30 seconds, resulting in a blur of tail lights across the bridge. I was a few hundred yards away, so a Nikon 300mm Nikkor-M lens was chosen for the 4x5 view camera to bring in the scene. The river was running still, which also created a reasonably sharp reflection of the town and the sky, even during the multi-second exposure.
