Foggy or Hazy mornings always present many possibilities, and the interaction of the bright early sunlight with the translucent air is usually dramatic. The condition also creates a great deal of depth in landscapes as the further objects are progressively lighter. On this morning the sky was also very textured, adding to the interest of the haze. I made a number of exposures before this one, spaced a few minutes apart, but the breaking sun always seems to be the most interesting. Just in the 15 minutes before the sun breaks over the horizon, the luminance of the scene changes drastically. Using a 4x5 view camera, this image was exposed onto Velvia 100F slide film. As usual I attempt to keep the most colorful sky above the sun on approximately Zone VII or VII 1/3, but to accomplish this through a series of 4 or 5 shots the exposure time was progressively changed from 8 seconds to 1/2 second.
