The lines and curvature of the Dole building make it one of my favorite KU architectural subjects. As in this image, dawn is a good time to study such structures due to a fortunate combination of events. All of the lights are still burning from the night before, but the brightening sky also begins to give definition to the building shapes. Using B/W film in my 4x5 view camera, the required exposure was approximately 2 seconds. As I made the multi-second exposures I cursed the wind for destroying the glass-like water surface, but it created a pleasing softened reflection and an interesting flutter in the flag.
